What is fashion and why we don't need itAs I scrolled my newsfeed today I was inundated with essential information about what colours were no longer fashionable in kitchens, why these particular bootcut jeans were a must have this season, and on and on it went. A cascade of information designed to do one thing, and one thing only. To make me buy more stuff.Fashion is just one, very key, driver of consumption. Consumption is good, excessive consumption is better, because then we need to buy more things to store our excess stuff. Consumption begets consumption.We see an increase in media and content creators now helping us to deal with our excess stuff, declutter, and reject consumption of plastic etc. One of the greater ironies I saw was when I was part of a consume-less social media group : the rejection of plastic and paper towels led to purchases of shiny new matching jars, rolls of fabric rags aesthetically presented. It was not a shift away from consumerism. It was a shift to the latest trend.True lower consumption is about using what we have, making do and mending, finding alternatives to buying something new. It's also about living life with a lower consumption footprint, not making our lives entirely about lowering our carbon footprint.Disruption is one of the best tools we have for change. Disrupting old patterns, whether they be dysfunctional relationship patterns or dysfunctional consumption patterns.What would happen if we stepped away from fashion and instead embraced our own comfort and style? Just imagine if comfort and longevity were the main drivers for our clothing and shoe wear purchases?From personal experience, I can tell you the world doesn't end. It's amazing how stylish other people think we are when we're wearing clothing we enjoy, regardless of how many years we've had it in our wardrobes. Our house is filled with a mix of old hand me down furniture, pieces I found second hand, and the odd new piece from when I couldn't find anything else. Our home is comfortable and welcoming, according to guests and people who live here.Curation is at the core of stepping away from the drivers of fashion and consumption. When we proactively choose how we want to feel, how we want our spaces to feel, and what we want our experience of our world to be, the loudest voice driving our choices is our own.What's fashionable, what's this season's must have, and what the current top interior design choices are becomes irrelevant. It's a disruption of mindless consumerism and a step towards conscious consumption.
