Most of us have a familiar internal flinch when we discover we are wrong about something. A tightening. A small contraction. The instinct to defend, explain, or quietly rearrange the facts so the wrongness lands somewhere else.It feels like losing something.That feeling is worth paying attention to. Not knowledge. We have gained that. Not understanding. That has just become more accurate. Not credibility. The people worth being around respect someone who can update their thinking more than someone who doubles down.What we lose, when being wrong feels like loss, is the comfort of a position we were identified with. The idea had become part of how we see ourselves. Letting it go feels less like updating a belief and more like losing a piece of who we are.That is not a thinking problem. It is an attachment problem.<h2 id="437e075a-ee7b-439c-abaf-f350a974ee65" data-toc-id="437e075a-ee7b-439c-abaf-f350a974ee65" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Where the Mana Comes From</h2>In te ao Māori, the Māori worldview, mana is a person's spiritual authority, their standing, their inherent power. It is not given by title or achievement. It is carried in how someone moves through the world. Mana can be strengthened or diminished, but it cannot be faked. People feel it.It is a useful lens here. If our sense of authority comes from being right, then every correction is a depletion. Every challenge is a threat. Every conversation where someone sees it differently becomes something to survive rather than something to learn from.If our sense of authority comes from somewhere deeper, from our groundedness, our willingness to look clearly, our capacity to stay present with what is actually happening, then being wrong costs us nothing. It gives us something instead. Accuracy. A better map. The kind of credibility that grows over time because people learn we can be trusted to care more about what is true than about being seen to be right.The question is not whether we can tolerate being wrong. It is where our sense of ourselves actually lives. When mana is intact, being wrong is just information. When authority depends on never being wrong, we cannot afford to be authentic.<h2 id="fcfe7770-10af-4589-9426-82b68d1d1f07" data-toc-id="fcfe7770-10af-4589-9426-82b68d1d1f07" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Fortified Position</h2>When being wrong feels dangerous, we build walls around our positions. We mistake rigidity for strength. We hold tighter when we could hold more honestly.This is familiar territory in boundary work. A boundary says: here is where I end. A wall says: nothing gets through. One of them requires a self. The other is a substitute for one.The willingness to be wrong is one of the clearest signals that what we have built is a boundary, not a wall. It means the self holding the position is sturdy enough to survive the position changing. It means our edges are not made of the things we believe. They are made of something more durable than that.<h2 id="e8060a24-b5ac-40fc-806f-91239330df24" data-toc-id="e8060a24-b5ac-40fc-806f-91239330df24" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Grip</h2>Most of us know this feeling. We are mid-conversation, mid-argument, mid-defence of something we said with confidence, and somewhere in the back of our body we already know. We know the position has a crack in it. We know the other person might have a point. We can feel the ground shifting underneath what we just said.We hold on anyway.Not because we still believe it. Because letting go, right here, right now, in front of this person, feels like it will cost us something we cannot afford to lose.That grip is worth noticing. Not to shame ourselves for it, but to get curious about what we think we are protecting. It is rarely the idea. It is almost always something underneath the idea. Our competence. Our authority. Our right to be taken seriously. The idea was just the vehicle. The grip is about the driver.When we can feel the grip and choose to loosen it anyway, something shifts. Not dramatically. Quietly. The way a held breath releases. The room gets a little larger. The conversation becomes possible again.<h2 id="a9b7434e-0ef6-476e-a4d2-d5d920e8202d" data-toc-id="a9b7434e-0ef6-476e-a4d2-d5d920e8202d" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">What the Grip Looks Like at Scale</h2>There is a version of this that plays out publicly every day. Social media has made it visible in ways that are hard to look away from.Watch any argument online long enough and the pattern becomes predictable. Someone is wrong, or is perceived to be. The response does not stay with the idea. It moves, fast, to the person. You are not just wrong. You are stupid. You are ugly. You are worthless. The insults are personal, visceral, and deliberately degrading.That escalation only makes sense if being wrong and being worthless are fused together. If wrongness is just an intellectual position, a disagreement stays intellectual. When wrongness is an identity threat, the response becomes an identity attack. I have to make you smaller because your being right makes me less.The binary is total. I am right, which makes me smart and credible and valuable. You are wrong, which makes you contemptible. There is no middle ground because there is no self underneath the position that could survive one.This is the same grip, just without the private moment of knowing. Or perhaps with it, buried so far under the adrenaline of the fight that it cannot be felt until much later, when the thread has been deleted and the shame arrives quietly in the dark.<h2 id="12031783-27e3-4c57-bfe8-53d160452375" data-toc-id="12031783-27e3-4c57-bfe8-53d160452375" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Uneven Ground</h2>There is something else worth naming here. The cost of being wrong is not the same for everyone. Being wrong while holding power or status is uncomfortable. Being wrong while marginalised, while already fighting to be taken seriously, while existing in systems that were not built to give the benefit of the doubt, can carry real consequences. The grip is not always about ego. Sometimes it is about safety. Sometimes holding a position is the only ground a person has, and the demand to let go of it comes from someone who has never had to fight for ground at all.This does not change the value of what we gain when we can release a position. It does change how we understand the grip when we see it in others, and how much grace we bring to the moments when letting go feels impossible.<h2 id="3fea1a27-324f-4c3b-8670-13222fe6024b" data-toc-id="3fea1a27-324f-4c3b-8670-13222fe6024b" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Binary That Does Not Exist</h2>Here is what the binary misses. Life is almost never that clean.We can be right about our experience and wrong about what it means. Right about someone's behaviour and wrong about their intent. Right about the facts and wrong about what matters. Right about one piece and spectacularly wrong about another, in the same sentence, in the same argument, in the same relationship.Relationships are especially resistant to the binary. Two people can hurt each other simultaneously. Both can be justified in their frustration and limited in their understanding. Both can be acting from real wounds and still causing real damage. Rightness and wrongness coexist in the same interaction all the time, layered and tangled and stubbornly refusing to sort themselves into neat columns.The insistence on a binary, I am right, you are wrong, end of discussion, is not clarity. It is a refusal to stay with complexity. It collapses something that is nuanced and layered and human into something flat enough to win.Winning is not the same as understanding. It is often the opposite.The willingness to be wrong, or to be partially wrong, or to hold the possibility that we might be wrong about something we feel certain about, is not weakness. It is range. It is the capacity to hold more than one thing at a time without needing to flatten it into a verdict.Most of the important things in our lives will never be simple enough for the binary to serve us. The relationships, the decisions, the conversations that actually shape how we live require something more spacious than right and wrong. They require us to stay in the room with complexity long enough to see what is actually there.<h2 id="76339d9c-b027-4e9e-8f70-5691a39a9596" data-toc-id="76339d9c-b027-4e9e-8f70-5691a39a9596" class="text-text-100 mt-3 -mb-1 text-[1.125rem] font-bold" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">What We Actually Gain</h2>When we let go of the need to be right, the list of what arrives is longer than most of us expect.Insight. The thing we were wrong about was obscuring something we could not see until we moved.Course correction. We were heading somewhere based on faulty information. Now we are heading somewhere based on better information. That is not loss. That is navigation.Better ideas. Ours were not the only ones in the room. When we stop defending them, we can hear what else is being offered.Trust. Not the performed kind. The real kind. The kind that comes from people learning, over time, that we are more interested in what is accurate than in what makes us look good.Relief. There is an exhaustion that comes from maintaining a position we have already quietly outgrown. Letting it go is not defeat. That would be its own kind of collapse.It is about noticing where the flinch lives. Where the tightening happens. Where the instinct to defend arrives before the willingness to listen. Those are not signs of strength. They are signs that something in us has confused what we think with who we are.The boundaried self does not need to be right. It needs to be present. It needs to be honest. It needs to be willing to discover that the map it has been using is not quite accurate, and to feel, in that discovery, something closer to relief than to threat.Being wrong, when we are resourced enough to meet it, is one of the most useful things that can happen to us.It just requires a self that is willing to still be there afterwards. When enough of us can do that, something else becomes possible. Not just individual growth, but genuine connection.
