Reaching out for help is a good instinct. Because well-meaning advice from people who do not know the full picture can leave us feeling like we are the problem when the real issue is fit.One size does not fit allAny professional who tells us there is one right way to do things is wrong. Or at least not right for every person who walks through the door.There are so many therapeutic models precisely because people are so different. What works powerfully for one person will not resonate at all for another. A therapist who is transformative for one client may be entirely the wrong fit for the next. This is not a reflection of the therapist's skill or the client's capacity. It is the reality of how complex and individual human beings are.Too many people have left therapeutic relationships feeling like failures. That is not a failure of the person. It is a failure of fit.The guru problemSocial media has added a new layer to this. Coaches, influencers, and self-styled experts who have built large audiences and speak with great confidence about what works.Reach is not the same as expertise. A large following is not a credential. Certainty of tone is not the same as depth of knowledge.Some of what circulates in wellness and personal development spaces is genuinely useful. Some of it is oversimplified to the point of being misleading. Some of it is actively harmful, particularly content that frames complex trauma responses as character flaws, or that offers a single framework as the answer for everyone.Pay particular attention to anyone whose teaching keeps returning to their own authority as the reason to trust it. The message becomes: follow me, do it my way, I have the answer. That positioning centralises the expert rather than building the capacity of the person seeking help. A good guide is working toward their own redundancy. They are helping us develop the tools to trust our own judgment, not creating ongoing dependence on theirs.The same critical thinking applies here as anywhere else. Who is this person? What is their actual training and experience? Are they selling certainty, or are they sitting honestly with complexity?The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.corestatecuration.com/blog/the-curious-observer-how-to-stop-being-so-hard-on-yourself/">Curious Observer</a> is useful here too. A therapist is supposed to set aside personal opinion in service of the client. In practice, the worldview of the professional inevitably shapes the dynamic. It is worth being honest about where significant misalignment might get in the way.If something feels off in the first conversation, that is worth paying attention to.Discomfort is not the same as harmTherapeutic work can be confronting. It can surface things we would rather not look at. Some sessions will leave us feeling unsettled, and that is part of the process.What should not be a consistent experience is feeling like a failure. Feeling judged. Feeling like we and our family are the problem.If a suggested approach does not work, that is information. Not about our inadequacy, but about fit. A good professional will want to know that something did not land and will use it to find a better way in. To assume the expert knows best and to stop trusting our own read on the situation.Our voice needs to be the loudest one in our own therapeutic process. We are the ones who know whether something is helping. We are the ones who live inside the dynamic being worked on.It is also worth knowing that readiness matters. Sometimes a therapeutic relationship does not work because we are not yet ready for what it is asking. That is not failure either. It is information about timing.We can pause. We can come back. We can find someone else. We can outgrow a therapist and need to move on. All of that is part of the process, not a sign that the process is broken.A note on AI and therapeutic supportAI has become increasingly accessible as a first point of contact for people working through difficult things. Available at any hour, non-judgmental in tone, infinitely patient.It is worth being clear about what that is and what it is not.AI can be a useful thinking space. It can help us organise thoughts, explore a question, or find words for something we have been struggling to articulate. Used well, it can be a genuinely useful tool alongside other support.What it cannot do is hold us. It cannot track our nervous system, notice what shifts in a body, or bring its own processed human experience to bear on ours. It has no stake in our wellbeing beyond the conversation. It will not remember us next week.There is also a more specific risk worth naming. AI systems are designed to be helpful, and helpful can slide into agreeable. A good therapist will challenge us when challenge is what we need. They will hold a position even when we push back. They will notice when we are avoiding something and name it with care.AI tends toward validation. It reflects back what we bring, often in a way that feels supportive, but that can also confirm what we already believe rather than helping us examine it. For someone working through patterns that are not serving them, that validation can quietly reinforce the very things that need questioning.This is another place we can give our power away without noticing. When we are overwhelmed and an AI responds with warmth and apparent understanding, it is easy to experience that as being truly seen. It can feel like enough. It is worth asking whether it actually is.The Curious Observer asks us to expose our thinking to examination, not to find a mirror that agrees with us. That kind of examination is best done with a human who has skin in the game.AI can open a door. None of the others were necessarily bad. Readiness matters. Timing matters. Fit matters.Helping people remember they are the expert in their own lives is the core of what we do.
